Pip, a good-natured, gullible young orphan, lives with kind blacksmith Joe Gargery and his bossy, abusive wife 'Mrs. Joe'. Just when Pip fears to get it really good while they have guests, a soldier comes for Joe who takes Pip along as assistant to work on the chains of escaped galley-convicts, who are soon caught. In the heat of the night (1967)

When a wealthy man planning to build a factory in Sparta, Mississippi, is murdered, Police Chief Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger) is pressured to find his killer quickly. Northerner Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), passing through, is picked up at the train station with a substantial amount of cash in his wallet. Gillespie, heavily prejudiced against blacks, jumps to the conclusion he has his culprit, but is embarrassed to learn that Tibbs is a respected Philadelphia homicide detective who had been visiting his mother. After this racist treatment, Tibbs wants nothing more than to leave as quickly as possible even though his captain recommends he stay and help, but the victim's widow (Lee Grant) is impressed by the detective's expertise clearing another wrongly accused suspect of the crime and threatens to stop construction on the much-needed factory unless he leads the investigation. Gillespie then talks Tibbs into lending his services.

Despite the rocky start to their relationship, they come to respect each other as they are forced to work together to solve the crime.

The Scorpion King is a 2002 film starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Michael Clarke Duncan, Kelly Hu, Steven Brand, Ralf Moeller and Grant Heslov, and is directed by Chuck Russell. It is a prequel to The Mummy series, following the story of Mathayus the Scorpion King, the character featured in The Mummy Returns. The character and plot parallel those of the fictional character Conan the Barbarian to some extent.

The events of The Scorpion King take place 5000 years before those in The Mummy Returns, and reveal Mathayus' origins and his rise to power as the Scorpion King. The name itself is a reference to a real king of the protodynastic period of Ancient Egyptian history, Scorpion II.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 1975 musical comedy film that parodies science fiction and horror films. With a screenplay written by Richard O'Brien and Jim Sharman, the film features Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick. The film is based on the British musical stage production The Rocky Horror Show.

The film is considered a cult classic and a midnight movie, although it is widely known by mainstream audiences and has a large international following. RHPS was the first movie from a major film studio—20th Century Fox—in the midnight-movie market.[1] The movie is one of the most well known and financially successful midnight movies.[2] It is the longest running theatrical release in film history.[3] More than 30 years later it is still in limited release in cinemas around the world.     * Susan Sarandon as Janet Weiss, a heroine. She is well-meaning, sweet and somewhat naïve, who was recently engaged to Brad, who gets tempted into bad ways.
    * Barry Bostwick as Brad Majors, a hero. He is the clean-cut fiancé of Janet Weiss, to whom he recently proposed at a friend's wedding.
    * Richard O'Brien as Riff-Raff, a domestic. Frank's assistant and Magenta's twin brother. Richard O'Brien wrote both the musical and the screenplay. He also sings the opening credits.
    * Patricia Quinn as Magenta, a domestic. Magenta is the twin sister of Riff-Raff, and works as Frank's domestic worker. Patricia Quinn's lips are used for the opening number and movie poster.
    * Nell Campbell as Columbia, a groupie. Columbia is the groupie, friend and self proclaimed lover of Frank, but also Eddie's alleged lover.
    * Jonathan Adams as Dr. Everett Von Scott, a rival scientist. He was Brad and Janet's high school science teacher. He has come to the castle in search of his nephew Eddie, who has been murdered by Frank.
    * Peter Hinwood as Rocky Horror, a creation. Muscle-bound creation of Frank's, with blond hair and a tan. Rocky has a solo with "Sword of Damocles", but does not speak-aside from ferral sounds for dialog and singing in the Floor Show at the end of the show. This was changed from the stage show. Rocky's songs are performed by Trevor White.
    * Charles Gray as the criminologist, an expert. The film's narrator.

Tremors is a 1990 dark comedy monster film about a group of people from a small Nevada town fighting subterranean worm-creatures dubbed "Graboids". It was directed by Ron Underwood, and stars Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross and Reba McEntire. The film's exterior scenes were shot near Lone Pine, California, an area which has long been used as a movie location.

Transsiberian is a thriller set on the legendary train that links the Far East and Europe, running from China and Mongolia to Russia.

Following a stay in Beijing, Roy and Jessie, a couple who are going through a rocky patch, decide to give their relationship one last go and have another adventure together, traveling on the Transsiberian from China to Moscow through exotic, wild and snow-laden places.

On the train, Roy and Jessie discover that the days of the Transsiberian's glorious luxury have faded since the fall of the U.S.S.R. The famous train's former glamor has disappeared, leaving cold steel carriages and taciturn fellow passengers, reputed to include drug traffickers. They take refuge in the company of a fellow western couple who arrive in their shared compartment, Carlos and Abby, who travel throughout the world giving language classes and re-selling handcraft, such as, on this occasion, Russian Matryoshka dolls.

Everything is going well until the four decide to get off the train at one stop. Roy gets separated from the rest of the group and the train carries on with the other three already back on board. Jessie, by now extremely worried, has no other option but to get off at the next station and wait until Roy comes on the following train. Abby and Carlos offer to wait with her. However, while they wait for him, Carlos tries to take advantage of Jessie and, in trying to defend herself, she ends up accidentally killing him. Terrified, she left the corpse in the snow. She then returns to the station, where Roy has finally arrived. Back together at last, Jessie tries to forget about what has happened. But the nightmare is only just beginning.

She soon discovers that Carlos was in fact a drug dealer who was being pursued by corrupt police officers, and they are now chasing her. Unwittingly, Roy and Jessie get caught up in the dark world of smuggling and betrayal. And they know that while the train is in motion, there is no means of escape!

The Thin Red Line is a 1998 war film which tells a fictional story of United States forces during the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II with the focus on the men in C Company, most notably Private Witt (Jim Caviezel) and his conflicted feelings about fighting in the war, Colonel Tall (Nick Nolte) and his desire to win the battle at any cost in order to get a promotion, and Private Bell (Ben Chaplin) and the dissolution of his marriage back home while he fights in the war.

The film marked director Terrence Malick's return to filmmaking after a twenty year absence. Malick adapted the screenplay from the novel of the same name by James Jones, which had previously been adapted in a 1964 film. The film features a large ensemble cast. The project took 20 years to make as Malick spent years researching and deciding whether or not to do it. Once it was announced that he would be returning to filmmaking, many big name movie stars expressed interest in appearing in the film, including Robert De Niro, Kevin Costner, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.

Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Sheen, Gary Oldman, Jason Patric, Bill Pullman, Lukas Haas, Viggo Mortensen and Mickey Rourke acted in the movie, but their scenes were eventually removed. Reportedly, the first assembled cut took seven months to edit and ran three and a half hours, with Thornton contributing three hours of narrative voice-over material, none of which was ultimately used.

Thin Red Line was not successful at the North American box office where it only grossed $36 million, well below its $52 million budget. Critical response was generally strong and the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best in Cinematography, Best in Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best in Sound Mixing. It won the top prize at the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival. Martin Scorsese ranked it as his second favorite film of the 1990s on Roger Ebert's television show.

This film portrays the actions of an American private David Manning (Ron Eldard) during the Battle of Hurtgen Forest, the battle between the United States Army and the German Wehrmacht which took place from 1944-1945 on the Western Front (World War II).

Private Manning is a reluctant hero and is initially shown as a bit of a shirker - "just doing enough to stay out of trouble", according to another character. Through the sheer bloodiness of the Hurtgen battles, Manning is left as the sole survivor of his unit and subsequently promoted to sergeant. He believes he is unqualified for the position, but his CO thinks otherwise. Manning then tries to back out of responsibility by asking to be filed on a Section 8 (mentally unfit due to combat stress) but is refused.

Manning finds himself in charge of replacements, a prospect he is less than thrilled with. Eventually he accepts his responsibilities and his position in the scheme of things. At one point, he goes on patrol with his platoon, but sends private Warren Sanderson up front. The men retreat at one point, but Sanderson gets lost and then narrowly avoids contact with the enemy. After the incident, Manning is scorned by his peers and berated by his commander.

After that, his captain comes to him with a suicidal mission requiring volunteers, and bargains with Manning that he will be authorized to transfer to the rear if he volunteers for the mission with some of his men. While succeeding in the mission, one of his men lose control over himself and decides to run. Realising everybody will run if he doesn't do anything, he shoots the soldier with his handgun, hitting one of the flamethrower gas bottle the soldier is carrying in his back, which causes it to explode and burns to death the soldier. While the rest of the men finds his conduct horrible and uncalled for, they stop running and assault the position where the two 88mm cannons are located, destroying them in the process. As it happens, the final successful assault is led by the same private Sanderson, armed with the other flamethrower.

Meanwhile, the rest of his section assaults a bridge, suffering horrendous casualties and getting shelled by German tanks afterwards. In the assault, Manning's lieutenant and platoon leader loses control over himself when a sergeant gives him a handful of dog tags from dead soldiers. When the lieutenant's battalion commander asks about the status of his platoon, the lieutenant snaps and tries to assault him--all the while moaning and crying--clearly unfit to lead soldiers in combat. Manning confronts the commander as the lieutenant is escorted out, yet the battalion commander has no other choice than to promote Manning to lieutenant.

After an altercation with another sergeant who accuses Manning of shooting his own men, Private Sanderson--who survived the raid on the 88mm cannons--defends his conduct by acknowledging the fact that everybody would have run instead of fighting. Manning also silences them by telling them that their section is going to have to assault German positions again.

Manning devises a plan to destroy the German tanks the night before the assault. If they don't, he knows that the entire battalion is in jeopardy. He bravely leads several of his man in a pre-dawn raid on the German batteries, mainly to spite those officers who demand the impossible while staying out of the firing line themselves. The operation costs the lives of his men except one--the same who survived the raid on the 88mm guns--while Manning gets wounded in the chest. The film concludes with a wounded Manning being carried back to the American lines by the now battle-hardened replacement Sanderson; a mirror image of his carrying back a wounded comrade at the opening of the film.

The overall point the film makes is that not everyone who took part in World War II was stereotypical hero material; in fact, Manning's role is distinctly one of an anti-hero, somebody ordinary pushed into extraordinary circumstances.

Spiderbabe is a straight-to-video softcore superhero adventure which tries to cash-in as a spoof to the mega-blockbuster, Spider-Man. It's as cheap a knockoff as you probably would expect, but thankfully the makers of this trash know they're in over their head, and ratchet up the camp value as high as they can within the confines of their limited budget and contrivances to get every character into a sex scene with one another. What you probably wouldn't expect is that it actually manages to be amusing from time to time, with a few good jokes, some silly gags having fun with the original film, and a keen sense of its own kitsch. Yes, it's dumb, but uses this to its advantage in a smart way.

A really weird Japanese fantasy movie Cat Girl Kiki was released by group SSF. The movie with elements of anime but also psychological drama has been quite popular, although the audio is completely Japanese. The movie has only 68 minutes so there’s an AC3 audio and fairly high video bitrate on this 1 CD release, as well as English subtitles.

Yoshiro is a lonely introvert who is stuck in a rut. Every day is drab and boring until he finds an abondoned kitten and brings it home. The next morning, Yoshiro discovers that the kitten had transformed into a beautiful girl named Kiki! Too bad she has cat ears and scratches up the furniture. It seems like a match made in heaven, but whats the secret behind Kikis sudden appearance, and what does it mean for Yoshiros chance at a normal life?

It stars Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Michael McKean, Julie Brown, and hitherto largely unknown comedians Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans. The film is marketed with the tagline "An out-of-this-world, down-to-earth comedy adventure". The film's plot is based on the song "Earth Girls Are Easy" from Julie Brown's 1984 mini-album Goddess In Progress.

The movie begins with three aliens, a blue one, a red one, and a yellow one, flying in a spaceship. While watching a music holographic video of a multi-coloured woman, they come across Earth. And, deciding that there were girls down there, decided to go down to Earth.

Valerie Gail (Davis) is a valley girl manicurist who works for the "Curl Up & Dye" hair salon. When she feels her cold fiancé Dr. Ted Gallagher (Rocket) is slipping away from her, she attempts to seduce him with a new look; instead she catches him cheating on her. The day after throwing him out, she is sunbathing when a spaceship housing three aliens crash lands in her pool. Not knowing what to do, she takes them to her best friend Candy Pink (Brown, who also co-wrote and co-produced). After shaving off the aliens' fur, they turn out to be incredibly hunky looking men. They all go out and party at Los Angeles nightclubs

The three aliens — Wiploc (Carrey), the red alien; Zeebo (Wayans), the yellow alien; and Mac (Goldblum), the blue alien — absorb human culture through ten minutes of television, and Valerie takes them out into the human world. Predictable social blunders ensue. Soon Valerie is in love with studly Mac, and after a night of lovemaking (which she's wary of at first, until seeing that Mac is indeed anatomically correct for her) she decides to abandon her valley life in favor of space travel with her hunky new alien lover.

In this dramatic courtroom thriller, Lt. Daniel Kaffee, a Navy lawyer who has never seen the inside of the courtroom, defends two stubborn Marines who have been accused of murdering a colleague. Kaffee is known as being lazy and had arranged for a plea bargain. Downey's Aunt Ginny appoints Cmdr. Galloway to represent him. Also on the legal staff is Lt. Sam Weinberg. The team rounds up many facts and Kaffee is discovering that he is really cut out for trial work. The defense is originally based upon the fact that PFC Santiago, the victim, was given a "CODE RED". Santiago was basically a screw-up. At Gitmo, screw-ups aren't tolerated. Especially by Col. Nathan Jessup. In Cuba, Jessup and two senior officers try to give all the help they can, but Kaffee knows something's fishy. In the conclusion of the film, the fireworks are set off by a confrontation between Jessup and Kaffee.

The Trouble with Angels is a 1966 comedy film about the adventures of two girls in an all girls school run by nuns. The movie was directed by Ida Lupino and stars Rosalind Russell and Hayley Mills. The featured players include Marge Redmond (who appeared as a nun in the television series The Flying Nun) as Sister Liguori, Mary Wickes (who also played a nun in Sister Act and its sequel Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit) as Sister Mary Lazarus, and Portia Nelson as Sister Elizabeth (who also played a nun in The Sound of Music).

The movie is set in a fictional all-girls Catholic boarding school operated by an order of nuns. Russell plays the Mother Superior, who spends the movie at odds with Mary Clancy (Mills), a rebellious teenager, and her misery-loves-company friend Rachel Devery (June Harding). The episodic storyline follows the young women through their high-school years.

The film was based on the memoir Life with Mother Superior by Jane Trahey, in which Trahey told the story of her high-school years at a Catholic school near Chicago in the 1930s. While in the novel the school was portrayed as a boarding school outside the city, Trahey actually attended what is now Providence-St. Mel's High School, which was only a day school. Many of the incidents mentioned in the book were actually based on Trahey's experiences at Mundelein College in Chicago. The character of Mary Clancy was based on Jane's actual friend, Mary, who later became Sister John Eudes a Sinsinawa Dominican.

U-571 is a 2000 film directed by Jonathan Mostow, and starring Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, Thomas Kretschmann, Jon Bon Jovi, Jack Noseworthy, Will Estes, and Tom Guiry. In the movie, a World War II German submarine is boarded in 1942 by disguised United States Navy submariners, seeking to capture its Enigma cipher machine.

The film's plot, though a work of fiction, is partly based on real events. It attracted criticism for two reasons: first, it was British personnel from HMS Bulldog who first captured a naval Enigma machine, from U-110 in the North Atlantic May 1941, before the United States entered the war. Second, German U-boat crews were portrayed in a negative light.

The real U-571 was never involved in any such events, was not captured and was sunk in January 1944, off Ireland, by a Short Sunderland flying boat from No. 461 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force.

U-571 was filmed in the Mediterranean Sea, near Rome and Malta.

Platoon is a 1986 Vietnam war film written and directed by Oliver Stone and starring Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker, Kevin Dillon, Keith David, John C. McGinley, and Johnny Depp. It is the first of Stone's Vietnam War trilogy, followed by Born on the Fourth of July (1989) and Heaven & Earth (1993).

The story is drawn from Stone's experiences as a U.S. Infantryman in Vietnam and was written by him upon his return as a counter to the vision of the war portrayed in John Wayne's The Green Berets.[1] The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1986. In 2007, the American Film Institute placed Platoon at #86 in their "100 Years...100 Movies" poll. British television channel Channel 4 voted Platoon as the 6th greatest war film ever made, behind Full Metal Jacket and ahead of A Bridge Too Far.

Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) is a young American who has abandoned college for combat duty in Vietnam. The year is 1967. Upon arrival, he sees dead soldiers in body bags being loaded into his plane. Taylor and several other replacements have been assigned to Bravo Company, 25th Infantry division, "somewhere near the Cambodian border." Worn down by the exhausting work and poor living conditions, his enthusiasm for the war wanes and he develops an admiration for the more experienced soldiers, despite their reluctance to extend their friendship.

One night while on patrol, his sleeping unit is set upon by a squad of North Vietnamese Army soldiers. Gardner, a fellow new recruit, is killed, and another soldier is maimed. Despite having passed the watch duty to Junior, a more experienced soldier who fell asleep, Taylor is blamed for the casualties. The platoon's most seasoned sergeants, the compassionate Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe) and harsh Staff Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger), argue. Taylor discovers a light wound to his neck, and he is sent to the field hospital for treatment.

Taylor returns from the hospital and gains acceptance from a tight-knit group in his unit that socialises, dances, and consumes drugs in an underground clubhouse. Next door, more conservative members of the unit drink beer and play cards. As the patrols continue, Taylor becomes a more seasoned soldier, no longer standing out amongst the others. During one patrol, a soldier goes missing. His mutilated body is found tied to a post close by. The platoon reaches a nearby village, where a food and weapons cache is discovered. Despite the villagers' denials, Barnes believes they are aiding Viet Cong soldiers and shoots an elderly woman in the head. The other soldiers explore the village. In one house, Taylor discovers a disabled boy and his mother hiding in a ditch beneath the floor. He harasses and taunts the boy, and Bunny (Kevin Dillon) beats the boy to death. Outside, Sergeant Elias arrives and gets into a fistfight with Barnes over the incidents. Lieutenant Wolfe (Mark Moses) ends the fight, and orders the men to burn the village. As the men leave a group of the soldiers drag a Vietnamese child to the bushes with the intentions of raping her. Taylor sees the attack and stops the group from raping the girl.

Upon returning to base, Elias reports Barnes' actions to Captain Harris (Dale Dye), who cannot afford to remove Barnes due to a lack of personnel. Taylor speaks of this as "a civil war in the platoon. Half with Elias, half with Barnes." On their next patrol the platoon is ambushed and becomes pinned down in a firefight. Elias, with Taylor and two other soldiers, goes to intercept flanking enemy troops. Barnes orders the rest of the platoon to retreat to be airlifted from the area, and goes back into the jungle to find Elias' group. After sending Taylor and the two soldiers back, Barnes finds Elias. Barnes fires three rounds into Elias' chest and leaves him for dead. Barnes reaches the helicopter, telling the others that Elias is dead. After they take off, a severely wounded Elias emerges from the jungle, running from a large group of NVA soldiers. As the helicopter circles overhead, he dies after being shot several more times by the NVA.

At the base, Taylor attempts to talk his group into killing Barnes in retaliation. While drinking, Barnes overhears this, and enters the room, daring them to kill him. No one takes up the offer, but as Barnes leaves, Taylor attacks him. Barnes manages to get the upper hand, and holds a knife to Taylor's face. However, one of the men in the group talks Barnes out of killing Taylor, so he leaves, but not before cutting him under the eye.

The platoon is later sent back to the ambush area in order to build and maintain heavy defensive positions against potential attack. That night a large attack occurs, and the defensive lines are broken. Captain Harris orders the Air Force pilots to "expend all remaining" inside his perimeter. During the chaos, Barnes and Taylor come face-to-face. As Barnes is about to kill Taylor with a shovel, the two are knocked unconscious by a last-ditch American napalm attack. A wounded Taylor regains consciousness the next morning and finds Barnes, who is also wounded. Taylor aims a rifle at Barnes, who dares him to pull the trigger. Taylor shoots Barnes three times in the chest, killing him. He then collapses and awaits medical attention. As he is loaded onto the helicopter, Taylor is reminded that because he has been wounded twice, he can go home. The helicopter flies away and Taylor weeps as he stares down at the destruction.

Joe's Apartment is a 1996 musical-serio-comic film starring Jerry O'Connell and Megan Ward and the first film produced by MTV Films. It was based on a short 1992 film first made for MTV (which was used as filler in between commercial breaks), but was also inspired 0by both the 1987 Japanese film Gokiburi-tachi No Tasogare (known as "Twilight of the Cockroaches" in the USA and the American short film "Those Damn Roaches", also made in 1987. The main focus of the story is the fact that unbeknownst to many humans, roaches can talk but prefer not to since humans "smush first and ask questions later". They also sing (as they do many times in the movie) and even have their own public access channel. Actors providing the roaches' voices included Billy West, Jim Turner and Dave Chappelle. The film is also Don Ho's first acting role (as Alberto Bianco).

An astronaut brings home a glowing green orb for his daughter. However, the orb kills him and corners the girl for its purposes. Claiming to the embodiment of all evil, the malevolent sphere, known as the Loc-Nar, terrorizes the little girl by showing a series of bizarre and fantastic tales it has influenced. The first is "Harry Canyon," a cynical taxi driver in a squalid futuristic New York who finds himself involved with a damsel in distress who is relentlessly pursued by murderous thugs who desire the Loc-Nar her archaeologist father found. The second is "Den" which chronicles the adventures of a nerdish boy who is thrown into the fantasy world of Neverwhere, where he is transformed into a studly naked muscle-man, desired by beautiful women, who must get involved in a conflict revolving around possession of the Loc-Nar. The third is "Captain Sternn" where the title character is a handsome but irredeemable scoundrel who stands accused in a trial that Loc-Nar throws into chaos. The fourth is "B-17", where a World War II bomber plane limps home after a bombing run, only to have the Loc-Nar ram into it and revive the dead crew members as murderous zombies. The next is "So Beautiful, So Dangerous" where a buxom secretary at the Pentagon is abducted by stoned alien wastrels and a oversexed robot. The final story is "Taarna", where the Loc-Nar has to come to a future Earth and changes a peaceful people into a horde of murderous barbarians who rampage with genocidal zeal. Only the last Tarackian, a silent swords-woman known as Taarna, can avenge the victims and stop the Loc-Nar.

Brigitte's on the run from Bailey Downs, and she tries to prevent what happened to her sister, Ginger, from happening to her by shooting up with monkshood. Eventually she collapses and the police that find assume the monkshood is an illegal drug, and she is sent to rehab. She is deprived of the only thing that will stop her from turning into a beast and killing everyone and everything in her way. She meets a girl who is quiet and not well-liked, and much like herself, by the name of Ghost that helps her deal with her new problem and to escape the werewolf curse.

Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (2004)

In 1815, in Canada, the sisters Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) and Brigitte (Emily Perkins) survive to a boat sinking, where her parents die. Alone and lost in the forest, they meet an old clairvoyant Indian that foresees their fate. Later, they are guided by the Indian The Hunter (Nathaniel Arcand) to a fort, and they seek for shelter with the men of the Northern Legion Trading Company. They note that the place is under siege of "Wendigos", a sort of werewolf that has killed most of the dwellers of the place, and the survivals are very afraid. Their lives are put in danger by the deranged locals and by the surrounding beasts.

Scream is a 1996 film directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson. The film revitalized the slasher film genre in the mid 1990s, similar to the impact Halloween (1978) had on late 1970s film, by using a standard concept with a tongue-in-cheek approach that successfully combined straightforward scares with dialogue that satirized slasher film conventions. Scream became a major commercial success upon its release, and was one of the highest grossing films of 1996. Hamburger Hill is a 1987 American war film about the actual assault of the U.S. Army's 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Division 'Screaming Eagles', on a well-fortified position, including trenchworks and bunkers, of the North Vietnamese Army on Ap Bia Mountain near the Laotian border. American military records of the battle refer to the mountain as 'Hill 937', its map designation derived from its being 937 meters high.

The series of assaults (which resulted in heavy casualties to the American forces) commenced on May 10, 1969, with the hill finally being taken on May 20.

The film portrays fighting, combat, courage, camaraderie and dedication to the mission among troops. It also brings up painful questions about the Vietnam War, such as the stigmatizing of replacement troops ("newbies" or, more crudely, "FNGs", for "Fuckin' New Guys") and of the seeming caprice of high command in the conflict, specifically the lack of strategic value of the hill and subsequent unnecessary casualties. Other issues include the effect of anti-war sentiment on morale, and racial tensions among troops (especially the overcoming of racial tension by gradual friendship and earned respect).

Written by James Carabatsos and directed by John Irvin, the film starred Dylan McDermott, Steven Weber, Courtney B. Vance, Don Cheadle and Michael Boatman. The novelization was written by William Pelfrey. Set in May 1969 during the Vietnam War, the movie was distributed by Paramount Pictures, which had only theatrical rights to the film, whereas the video rights were owned by Vestron Video, and in later years by Live Entertainment, Artisan Entertainment, and Lions Gate Entertainment (which also recently acquired the UK video rights with distribution by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment). However, Paramount Television's successor CBS Television Distribution continues to distribute the film on TV.

One aspect of the war portrayed is how the soldiers in the field felt betrayed by people back in the United States, particularly college students. In one scene a soldier gets a letter from his girlfriend saying she will not keep writing because her college friends told her it was immoral. In another scene, Sgt. Worchester (played by Steven Weber) from the Southern United States says that when he got home he faced discrimination for being a veteran. When he got off the plane, hippies gave him and his fellow soldiers bags of dog feces. When he got to his house, his wife was sleeping with another man. None of this bothered him until he discovered that his local bartender had lost his son in the battle of the Ia Drang Valley and was sent home in "a rubber bag with 'members missing' labeled on it." To make it worse, college students kept phoning him saying they were glad his son was killed by "the heroic people's army", causing the bartender to start using heroin. This event caused Worchester to sign up for another tour in Vietnam.

The Animals' song We Gotta Get out of This Place is also featured in this film.

The year is 1989, and the United States decides to send a married couple to live on the moon and operate a U.S. weather station. The two astronauts currently manning the station, Hoffman (Dennis Weaver) and Schmidlap (Howard Morris) are suffering the effects of their long stay in space and need to be relieved, as Schmidlap regularly ties up Hoffman and has even knocked out his two front teeth. The sex-starved Schmidlap sits around drawing lewd pictures of naked women, prompting Hoffman to lament, "If only I could get him to go back to divinity school!"

These guys are F ing Crazy

The Sharp End, the latest release from Sender Films, takes the average viewer out of his climbing comfort zone as it focuses on climbers pushing both their physical limits and their safety. The DVD highlights a variety of areas including California’s Yosemite Valley, Colorado’s Frontrange, the French Alps and the Czech Republic.

While some have suggested that the The Sharp End focuses too extensively on BASE jumping, the DVD divides its time nicely between traditional and aid climbing, bouldering and free soloing reminding viewers that there is no clear definition for the term from which the title is derived. The DVD, which runs approximately 60 minutes, begins rather expectedly with traditional climbing. The backdrop for the first lesson in living on the sharp end is none other than Colorado’s Frontrange. Time is also spent in other common U.S. climbing havens as well. These include Moab, Bishop, and Yosemite Valley.

Perhaps less predictable was the segment where Alex Honnold, Cedar Wright and Matt Segal tried out the local climbing techniques of the Czech Republic – think long run outs that basically leave climbers free soloing, knotted ropes as pro and absolutely no chalk. Accompanying this was a brief stint at tower jumping on the part of Cedar Wright; not the most exciting element of the DVD, but an excellent reminder of the desire climbers often have to push themselves at whatever they set their minds to.

The extra footage was probably just as interesting as the movie itself. Tommy Caldwell’s one-day climb of the Direct NW Face of Half Dome (5.14) was probably one of the best. The footage in this piece was amazing. Another segment featured a bit that combined traditional climbing in Yosemite and Eldorado Canyon. It also showcased Adam Ondra climbing a 5.15 sport route in the Czech Republic. Hank Caylor, who discussed is base jumping antics early in the DVD, also made an appearance in the extra footage where he rambled on many topics including his attempts to climb the infamous South Face of Half Dome. Behind the scenes footage is also included which gives viewers insight on the amount of hard work that is involved in capturing the impressive shots in the movie. Of course, there are Sponsor Spots to check out as well.

The Sharp End makes a great addition to any climber’s climbing movie collection, and even comes with a family-friendly edited version for those who don’t want to hear any bad language. It is a unique film and an excellent reminder that nothing in the climbing world is finite; there are always new ways to push (and exceed) the limits of what seems accomplishable
